Seafieldroad debut single - online now!

Sunday, October 03, 2010

As some of you may know, while we were finishing our second album Dead Orchestras we were also recording two albums of piano songs by Andrew.

The first of those albums, There Are No Maps Of This Part Of The City, will be released on Monday 29 November under the name Seafieldroad. All three members of Swimmer One worked on it - Andrew sang and played piano, Hamish produced it, and Laura sang on (and co-wrote) several songs.

A double A-side single from the album, Hanging/There Are No Maps For This Part Of The City, will be officially released as a free download on Biphonic Records on Monday 22 November. However, you can download it directly from us right now at Seafieldroad’s Bandcamp page.

Andrew has written a blog about the making of the album, which you can read here.

In memory of Edwin Morgan

Friday, August 20, 2010

In Sobieski’s Shield from danielwarren.tv on Vimeo.

Edwin Morgan died this week. By way of tribute, this is a new film by our regular collaborator Daniel Warren, in which Daniel reads one of Edwin’s poems, In Sobieski’s Shield, to music by talkingmakesnosense, and photographs taken at disused nuclear bunkers around Scotland. If you’ve seen Daniel’s artwork for our new album, Dead Orchestras, the photos will look very familiar. RIP Edwin.

Swimmer One on the big screen

Thursday, July 22, 2010

The very talented Daniel Warren, who designs all our artwork and has made numerous films with us, is showcasing all of his film work with Scottish Ballet at the Filmhouse in Edinburgh on 24 August, in a one-hour programme called Bodies of Work.

The evening includes a screening of Public Private (see clip above), with music by Hamish from Swimmer One. It’s well worth catching on a big screen, where it looks and sounds fantastic.

Solo live show by Andrew, Sat 5 June

Sunday, May 30, 2010

While finishing off our new album Dead Orchestras (out tomorrow) we also recorded 22 more songs for a new Swimmer One side project called Seafieldroad. It’s much more pared down than Swimmer One - Andrew sings and plays piano, Laura sings too, Hamish is producing it all as well as adding wee electronic noises here and there.

More news on Seafieldroad releases later in the year. Meanwhile Andrew will debut some Seafieldroad songs (and play a couple of Swimmer One songs) at his first ever solo gig, at the Sierra Metro gallery in Edinburgh on Saturday 5 June. There’s an exhibition opening from 7pm, and Andrew will be playing at around 9pm. Come along, look at some art, hear some new songs. You can find directions to the gallery here

Dead Orchestras - first reviews in!

Thursday, May 20, 2010

Reviews of our new album are starting to appear in the press…

‘Their tech-packed noir pop is frequently remarkable,’ says Chris Buckle in Scottish monthly magazine The Skinny, giving it four stars.

There’s another four star review in The List. ‘One of the most captivating and unique pop acts around,’ says Camilla Pia, who previously wrote very nice things about our first album, The Regional Variations.

Former Q and Smash Hits editor John McKie is also very supportive in this article for the Caledonian Mercury.

Click on the links to read the full reviews. More on way, we hope!

The album is released on 31 May. You can preorder it here and listen to/embed/share five songs here.

The Darktown Cakewalk - go see

Some Swimmer One-related news. If you’re in Glasgow this Friday (23 April) get yourself along to The Darktown Cakewalk, an epic 13-hour improvised performance at the Arches, featuring almost 100 dancers and musicians - including our own Laura Cameron Lewis in one of the lead roles - which is being staged by Linder Sterling as part of this year’s Glasgow International contemporary art festival.

It’s a show that’s quite close to our hearts. Not only is Laura in it, it’s being filmed by Daniel Warren - who designs all our artwork and has made numerous films with us - and photographed by Jannica Honey, whose photos of Swimmer One are all over this website.

Linder has been keeping a photoblog during rehearsals at The Work Room, the dance studio Laura runs at Tramway in Glasgow, which you can look at here if you’re interested.
